8 sett 1969 anni - John Calvin Daly Jr
HOMICIDE
Descrizione:
John Calvin Daly Jr was originally from 609 Columbia Ave, Cape May, NJ. He was visiting CA/"touring the area" at the time. John was a student at Redlands University (in Redlands, CA) in 1968-69, "but he was not registered from the current semester." A few NJ articles call him a "former student" of the university.
John, 18, was found deceased in the city of Monterey on Monday, September 8, 1969. He had been stabbed multiple times in the chest and abdomen. He was lying in heavily-wooded Dan Dahvee Park, "a steep area of oak trees and brush," on the east side of Munras Avenue. John had been dead several hours when he was found by Phillip Martinez, a city parks&rec employee. One clipping said John was estimated to have been dead, "since early Monday."
He was found lying on his back in a brushy area beneath an oak tree. The murder occurred just 30yd from "heavily-traveled" Munras Avenue; however, "the body was out of sight of passing motorists." A bedroll and a suitcase were found near the body. One newspaper clipping specifically stated the bedroll and suitcase were his, and that they were found next to his body. He was wearing "blue denims." One newspaper described John as being dressed "hippie-style," and another described him as "long-haired."
The autopsy revealed that John had been stabbed a total of 13 times with a long-bladed knife; no weapon was found at the scene. There was one wound to his back at the shoulder level, while the rest were to his chest and abdomen. His heart had been punctured twice, and one lung was also punctured.
Earlier in 1969, John, who went by "Jack" among people he knew, was briefly arrested along with two others in his dorm room by Redlands Police. He was arrested because he had mailed a package home, and his parents took the package to the Cape May police station because it appeared to contain drugs. The Cape May police notified Redlands Police, who then went to John's dorm to search for narcotics. This was when he was arrested. However, the charges were dropped for lack of evidence, because police "were unable to prove conscious possession of narcotics against any of the three." Some time after the charges were dropped, John left Redlands.
According to one newspaper clipping, John left Cape May, NJ on August 22, 1969, "after indicating to his father [that] he did not want to testify in a narcotics trial involving a friend." His father said that he had not heard from his son since then. John then "appeared to be traveling through the area" of Monterey at the time of his death. Officers did not know how long John had been in Monterey by the time he died.
Despite this, no motives or suspects have ever been identified in the case, "and there is limited info for detectives to work with." John's case is still unsolved, and is listed on the city of Monterey's cold case page.
I found out about this murder while looking through various official cold case pages, hence the "My Research" tag on this event.
