The Palestinian National Initiative (PNI) was established on June 17, 2002, by Haidar Abdel-Shafi, Mustafa Barghouti, and Ibrahim Dakkak. It positions itself as a "democratic third force" in Palestinian politics, aiming to offer an alternative to both Fatah and Hamas. The PNI advocates for a democratic, independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. It emphasizes democratic reform within the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) and promotes non-violent resistance to Israeli occupation.

The PNI has seen limited success in elections. In the 2005 presidential election, Mustafa Barghouti received 19.48% of the vote. In the 2006 legislative election, the PNI, as part of the Independent Palestine list, secured 2.7% of the vote and won two seats. The PNI has also participated in local elections, showing some gains, but struggled to make a significant impact in subsequent elections, including the 2016 local elections and the abortive 2021 legislative election.

The party has been led by Mustafa Barghouti since its founding and is supported mainly by secular intellectuals and civil society organizations. Its visibility and influence remain limited compared to larger factions like Fatah and Hamas.
