The Special Committee on Israeli Practices (UNSCIIP)
Established by UN General Assembly Resolution 2443 (XXIII) on 19 December 1968, UNSCIIP monitors human rights in occupied territories. It comprises representatives from three member states appointed by the General Assembly President.
Task
UNSCIIP investigates Israeli settlements, prepares annual draft resolutions, and reports to the General Assembly via the Fourth Committee on Israeli settlements, the Fourth Geneva Convention, and the Palestinian Right of Return. The committee's mandate is renewed annually by resolutions like 2727 (15 December 1970) and 2851 (20 December 1971). The latest report was on 24 June 2019.
Achievements
Defined the Palestinian issue as a political problem requiring a political solution.
Provided a platform for UN members to oppose imperialism and show solidarity with the Third World.
Supported Palestinian optimism in international law and the UN's global initiative.
Israel's Reaction
Israel has denied UNSCIIP access to the disputed territories and declined to participate in its inquiries.
