Hank McCoy asks Charles Xavier if he's heard from Scott or Jean, as both have been out of contact since leaving on their honeymoon. Attempting to use Cerebro to locate them, he find that they are simply gone. Xavier, McCoy and Drake begin the search for them, starting with their last known location, in Rio. There they follow their trail, which leads them to Nathaniel Essex claiming to be the descendent of himself. He tells them that he encountered the couple months earlier but they parted ways. Xavier discovers this to be a lie, and they track Essex into the jungle, where he captures them and takes them back to his laboratory in the Eternal city. There, they find Scott and Jean. Together, they manufacture an escape, though Xavier is badly injured in the process. They all return to the US, where it is determined that Prof X will never regain the use of his legs. Feeling regret, Scott returns to the school to help care for his mentor. He and Jean rejoin the school as staff.
