23yo; found shot to death in a muddy ditch alongside the San Diego Freeway near Talbert Avenue in Fountain Valley. At 2:25am, the killer(s) apparently pulled their car next to Gardner, who was riding his motorcycle, and fired repeatedly at almost point blank range with a .22 caliber automatic pistol / rifle. He was shot 5 times in the chest, but managed to drive another 300ft before crashing. The first bullet hit him in the back, the next three in the side, and the last one hit him in the neck. Two .22 caliber cartridge cases were found near the scene.

Due to the accuracy needed to hit him 5 times while going 50-60mph, there were likely at least two killers: one driving and the other firing the shots. However, his motorcycle ~may~ have been hit by the killer's car prior to him being shot. Apparently, during the early morning hours of the same day, several other motorists reported they had been fired at, according to police.

The one (1) suspect in the case mentioned in the papers, Gary A Rishel, was cleared of suspicion for Gardner's murder, as he had an established alibi (he lived in Pennsylvania at the time)
