19yo; Janet was last seen on the morning of Sept. 30 at the Welfare Office in Eureka, attempting to hitchhike back to her apartment on Pigeon Point Rd.
Oct. 3: Janet was reported missing after her friends noticed that she hadn't attended any of her classes at Humboldt State University (HSU) in Arcata that week.
Oct. 6, at ~11:30am: Humboldt County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) received a letter from an anonymous witness who had discovered the body but didn't want to be involved in the case. The letter was postmarked Saturday, Oct. 4th.
Oct. 6: Janet's partially disrobed body was discovered in brush off the side of Highway 299, near the Korbel weigh station, east of Blue Lake. She was "believed to have been killed Sept. 30 possibly by someone who picked her up hitchhiking in Eureka that day." No wounds were visible on the body other than bruising on face and throat. She had been strangled and possibly raped.
Janet Lee Bowman, Karen Fischer, Sherrie Smith, and Vickie Schneider are four young female homicide victims in Humboldt County, all killed btwn Sept. 1975 and June 1976. Their cases have been linked by newspapers from the beginning, and they are sometimes referred to as the Humboldt Four
