17yo; initially reported missing from Petaluma, CA by her foster parents on 3/16/71 after she was last seen hitchhiking a short distance away from her foster home on Hearn Ave in Santa Rosa at ~7pm

Mar. 26: a young hitchhiker named Lisa Smith was picked up by a male driver, who reportedly brandished a gun & threatened to rape her; she jumped out of the pickup, which was going ~55mph south of Novato, CA. She was treated at Novato General Hospital for a skull fracture and multiple severe cuts & bruises; a nurse thought she looked ~21yo
April 1: a Santa Rosa Press Democrat article reported that "Lisa Smith" at the hospital was the same person as 17yo Lisa Michele Smith
"Lisa Smith" left the hospital before authorities could interview her and purportedly hitchhiked back to San Francisco
According to the article, her bio parents then located her shortly afterwards and took her back to their home in Livermore, CA

Jowever, it's unclear if "Lisa Smith" and Lisa Michele Smith were the same people, and in 2011 the Press Democrat reported that Lisa Michele Smith is still missing
