Donna Lass, 25, worked as a nurse at the first aid station of the Sahara Tahoe Hotel-Casino in Stateline, NV. She treated her last patient at 1:40am on Sunday, September 6, 1970. Her last entry in the nurse's log book was at 1:50am. Her car was found parked at her apartment complex in nearby South Lake Tahoe, CA, but she wasn't seen after leaving the Sahara. At her apartment, there were no signs of a struggle, the light was left on, and clothes were left folded. All of her personal belongings, with the exception of the clothes she was wearing that night as well as her purse, were left behind in her apartment. Her bank account was also left undisturbed.

Later that day, or on the following day, an unknown male called both Donna's landlord as well as her employer, stating that Lass wouldn't be returning, as she had left town due to a family emergency. There was not a family emergency at the time. The caller has never been identified.

According to two police reports filed on Mar. 25, 1970, a woman claimed that at a restaurant in South Lake Tahoe, a man wanted to read her astrological chart. Later that day, he came to her house to read an astrological chart that he had prepared. The man was "30- to 40-years-old, 5 foot 9 inches tall, 160 pounds, had a pudgy stomach and wore horn-rimmed glasses", which is similar to the Zodiac's description. He eventually left her house without incident.

On March 22, 1971, the "Peek Through the Pines" postcard believed to be from the Zodiac and appearing to claim responsibility for Lass's disappearance, was sent to Paul Avery. It featured a scene of the Lake Tahoe area from an ad for Forest Pines condominiums, as well as the text (from magazine lettering) "Sierra Club", "Sought Victim 12", "peek through the pines", "pass Lake Tahoe areas", and "around in the snow". The Zodiac's crossed-circle symbol was in both the place of the usual return address and the lower-right section of the front face of the postcard. On December 27, 1974, a Christmas card was sent to Mary Pilker (Lass's sister), portraying trees covered in snow. Once opened, it revealed a message that was part of the card itself, reading "Holiday Greetings and Best Wishes for a Happy New Year", followed by the handwritten message, "Best Wishes, St. Donna & Guardian of the Pines". The envelope was addressed to "Mrs. Mary Pilker, 1609 South Grange, Sioux Falls, South Dakota". It was postmarked 940, either from San Mateo or Santa Clara County.

In 1986 a skull was found in a drainage ditch near Emigrant Gap along California State Route 20, near Interstate 80 in the Sierra Nevada, either 70mi from South Lake Tahoe or 45mi northwest of SLT. No other evidence was found with the skull at the time. In December 2023, the skull was identified as Lass's through DNA profiling; the DNA from the skull matched a sample given by Lass's sister, identifiying it as Lass's. The police did not indicate how Lass died or whether homicide was suspected.

Lass had moved from California to Nevada in May 1970, four months before her disappearance. She had apparently just rented her aforementioned apartment the day before she went missing. As stated in many Dec. 2023 articles, at the time of the identification of her remains, the sheriff's office shared a February 1971 clipping from the Sacramento Bee that reported that Lass was last seen with a young-looking blonde man "near the apartment she had rented the day before and never lived in."

The Sahara Tahoe is now known as the Golden Nugget Lake Tahoe Hotel & Casino. While there is a lot of speculation that Lass's case is linked to the Zodiac, authorities have never conclusively linked the two.
