The military and economic pressure on the Taifa kingdoms led the Muslim rulers to seek help from Yusuf ibn Tashfin, the Almoravid Emir who ruled the Maghreb. In 1086, 1088, 1090 and 1097, Almoravid troops crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and launched a series of attacks on the Christians.
