This was a 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decision that held that California cannot segregate its schools on the basis of "language deficiency." The Mendez family, who were Mexican-American farmers, tried to enroll their students at their local school, but they were denied and told that their children would have to enroll at local schools for Mexican-American students. Four other families receiving similar treatment joined their lawsuit as well.

The families did not pursue racial discrimination arguments since Mexicans had been legally declared white recently, but instead argued that their children were being discriminated against on the basis of language. Ultimately, the 9th Circuit agreed.

This case helped form the precedent for the later Brown v. Board of Education, which officially desegregated all schools.
