Descrizione:
Final Israeli Objectives and the Battle for Sharm el-Sheikh
Logistical Challenges and Strategy
By 3 November, the IDF had secured the Gaza Strip, al-Arish, the Hedgehog, and the Mitla Pass. The last significant objective was Sharm el-Sheikh. Colonel Abraham Yoffe's 9th Infantry Brigade faced significant logistical difficulties due to the lack of good roads linking Ras an-Naqb to Sharm el-Sheikh. After capturing Ras an-Naqb on 30 October, Dayan ordered Yoffe to wait for air superiority before proceeding further.
Outflanking Maneuvers
To support the advance on Sharm el-Sheikh, Dayan ordered paratroopers to seize the town of Tor in the western Sinai. Despite the heavy fortifications at Sharm el-Sheikh, Egyptian forces had been under continuous Israeli air attacks since the beginning of the conflict.
Advance and Initial Skirmishes
Yoffe set out for Sharm el-Sheikh on 2 November, overcoming terrain challenges and vehicle breakdowns along the way. The Israeli Navy supported the 9th Division during its advance, providing crucial naval artillery support.
Assault on Sharm el-Sheikh
After several skirmishes on the outskirts, Yoffe ordered an assault on the port around midnight on 4 November. Following four hours of intense fighting, Yoffe's forces were forced to retreat. On the morning of 5 November, Israeli forces launched a massive artillery barrage coupled with napalm strikes against the Egyptian defenses.
Surrender of Sharm el-Sheikh
At 9:30 am on 5 November, the Egyptian commander, Colonel Raouf Mahfouz Zaki, surrendered Sharm el-Sheikh. The battle resulted in 10 Israeli soldiers killed and 32 wounded. Egyptian casualties included about 100 killed, 31 wounded, and 864 taken prisoner.
Summary
The capture of Sharm el-Sheikh marked the final significant military objective for the IDF in the Sinai campaign. The success of the operation was a combination of strategic planning, effective air support, and overcoming logistical challenges, leading to a decisive Israeli victory in the Sinai Peninsula during the Suez Crisis.
