22 nov 973 anni - palace coup of 973
Descrizione:
Tensions had been simmering in the Saffarid court for years after the coup of 960 AD, a series of weak rulers and internal feuds had severely depleted the its strength. When the teenage Shah Kewan II took the throne at just 14 years of age after his father's unexpected death, many subjects questioned whether such a young sovereign could provide the decisive leadership required.
Into this power vacuum stepped Kewan's great-uncle, the Grand Vizier Iskandar, a cunning and disgraced person whom almost dismissed years earlier for corruption and debauchery. Fearing to lost power, he began conspiring with resentful nobles and disgruntled military commanders, convincing them that the callow Kewan was unfit for the crown and promising wealth and titles.
Finally, in november 973, Iskandar's coup was launched. Palace guards loyal to the shah put up a valiant defense, but were eventually overwhelmed by the rebels' superior numbers and tactical advantages. Fighting raged through the corridors until at last, the teenage Kewan was captured within his royal chambers.
What happened next has been forever shrouded in mystery and horror. While some claim Iskandar took sadistic pleasure in tormenting his young nephew before having him executed, others say the 14-year-old shah was swiftly slain, his lifeless body unceremoniously discarded like rubbish. Regardless of the painful details, Kewan II's life and reign were extinguished far too soon.
In the aftermath, Iskandar proclaimed himself the new Shah of Persia. However, his tenuous claim was swiftly challenged by other royal factions who likewise craved the ultimate prize - the Saffarid throne. This plunged the empire into over a decade of bitter civil war as mass armies of claimants battered each other across the Persian lands.
