American, British, And French whaling and sealing ships frequent the coast. A Few white traders decided to live there. They would trade firearms for Ivory with the indigenous Ovambo and Herero "African" people. BUT this presented a threat as Africa was becoming more populated with Europeans. Their land and culture was being threatened. These locals tribes (and others) formed a confederation to try to combat this.
