2 sett 960 anni - palace coup of 960
Descrizione:
Year 958, Shapur had ascended to the throne just 20 years old after the death of his father. However, his youth and inexperience made him vulnerable to the machinations of his power-hungry uncle, Laith.
Laith had long coveted the throne for himself. An ambitious and cunning man, he began secretly colluding with several influential ministers at court who had grown disgruntled with Shapur's reign. Fueling their discontent, Laith convinced them that the young shah was unfit to rule and that only he could provide the strong leadership the empire needed.
As the coup plot thickened, Laith's co-conspirators began undermining Shapur at every turn. False rumors were spread to turn the populace against him. Strategic miscalculations were contrived to make him appear incompetent on the battlefield. Even assassins were hired in attempt to eliminate the shah, though their plots failed.
Finally, on a fateful night in 960, the conspirators struck. Laith's men seized control of the palace guards and secured the grounds. Making their way to the shah's chambers, they overwhelmed his personal bodyguards after a brief but bloody skirmish. The young Shapur I was dragged before his traitorous uncle, overwhelmed and defiant to the last.
Though precisely what happened next is still debated by historians, the dreadful result was clear - Shapur I was dead, likely slain on Laith's orders. His reign, and his life, were cut short before he had even reached 23 years of age. With the rightful shah out of the way, Laith declared himself the new ruler of the Saffarid Persia through his role in the palace coup.
