Cash for Questions was a scandal conducted by Conservative MP Neil Hamilton who was paid large sums of money to ask questions in parliament-or lobbying.

MPs are expected to ask questions on behalf of their constituency.

Hamilton's story was addressed widely in the press, with the Guardian calling him a "Liar and a cheat".

Cash for Questions was among many scandals and political sleaze during Major's government along side stories of illegal arms dealing.

These scandals shine a particular negative light on the Conservative party as Major described a "Back to Basic" policy in which Britain would focus on bringing back traditional values.

The scandals were criticised through satire, best seen in Private eyes 'Secret Dairy of John Major' and Spitting Image's grey depiction of him.
