Descrizione:
Major was the new Prime Minister and was perceived as a Thatcherite. However Major's first initiative was to unite the Conservative party.
Major also reformed some relations with Europe without fully committing with the single euro currency to maintain unity.
Major also got rid of the wildly unpopular poll tax. Opinion polls for the Conservatives was improving with 29%, however they were not overtaking Labour who had 41%.
Major remained optimistic and ran a good campaign with Major giving speeches on the street on top of a soap box. The Conservatives were still seen as the party to sort out the countries economic problems.
Labour's campaign lacked in comparison and memories from the 1980s were still present.
The Tories won with a majority of 21, however this was less than the 101 majority of 1987
