Rhodesia had the opportunity to be independent if they had a majority vote. This majority vote would never happen due to the extreme racism in the country. White people were in the minority but held most of the power in Rhodesia.

Ian Smith created the Unilateral Independence declaration which created an independent Rhodesia under white supremacy.

This was a direct threat to the Labour government, however Wilson was unsure of the public attitude towards fighting the whites.

Ian Smith and Wilson negotiated terms on the HMS Tiger. They came to a satisfying deal with both going home with a document. Smith however went back on everything he said as soon as he got back to Rhodesia.

Wilson would attempt another negotiation as well as oil sanctions. However these would fail with many oil companies ignore the sanction. Additionally, Rhodesia had good production of iron and steel. Rhodesia also cut oil travelling through it's land to Zambia and international effort was made to get oil to Zambia.

Rhodesia remained run by an independent white majority until 1979.
