Threat of communist invasion was being diminished by the mid 60s, as such the Vietnam war was being seen as unnecessary.

Britain did not send any soldiers to Vietnam however Wilson did openly support America's involvement in the war. America loans for Britain's welfare state had some influence on this support. Wilson once said "You do not kick your creditors in the balls".

However many of Labour's candidates did not support the war, as well as young students.

Many protest were held by students, one of which being the Battle of Grosvenor which resulted in the arrest of 200 people.

Many students went further, with Wilson's visit to Cambridge being met with students attacking his car.

Although most "ordinary voters" did not care much for the Vietnam war, Wilson lost some connection to younger people with his support.
