[deHaas Mss] ·Elkus met, converted to Zionism. ·Advised to delay public declaration. ·Recommended discussing with House for timing. ·Declaration seen as beneficial in U.S. and England. ·Wise to coordinate with deHaas and Elkus. -Letters of Louis D. Brandeis. Vol. 4 (1916-1921)

Descrizione:

To Stephen Samuel Wise
October 6, 1917 Washington, D.C. [deHaas Mss]

MY DEAR DR. WISE: Elkus saw me on Thursday. Says he is converted to Zionism, but that you had indicated to him that it is best for the Cause that he should not declare himself yet.
I suppose he has misunderstood you, and told him that, unless House sees some objection, it would, in my opinion, be wise for him to come out now. This would be useful not only in America, but abroad and perhaps particularly in England.
Please talk this over with deHaas and then with Elkus.¹

Sub Note:
1. On 8 October Wise replied that Colonel House "was strongly against any statement by [Elkus] at this time saying, 'It might interfere with my plans to use you.' Mr. Elkus will tell you more of this when he sees you. He holds himself ready to make the statement whenever we deem it wise for him to do so." No formal announcement was forthcoming, but Ambassador Elkus was cooperative to the Zionist movement, and even spoke occasionally at Zionist meetings. Elkus happened to be president of Rabbi Wise's Free Synagogue.
