1 apr 1845 anni - Maynooth Grant
Descrizione:
Peel wanted to get the support of the Catholic priests because they had huge social influence in Ireland. He wanted to increase Catholic support for English rule and reduce the appeal of the repeal movement. He increased grants given to Maynooth College, a Catholic seminary near Dublin. The increased funding passed due to Whig support. There was a hostile response to this in England due to Protestant opposition. William Gladstone resigned (the president of the Board of Trade) and it was very unpopular within Peel's own party.
