22 ottob 1948 anni - Beit Hanoun wedge

Descrizione:

The Beit Hanoun wedge was an Israeli military maneuver during Operation Yoav in the 1948 Arab–Israeli War aimed at dividing Egyptian forces in Palestine. The operation focused on Beit Hanoun in the Gaza Strip, capturing strategic positions from October 15–19 and the village itself from October 20–22. Although the wedge failed to split the Egyptian forces significantly, it contributed to broader strategic objectives of Operation Yoav.

A reinforced battalion from the Yiftach Brigade, supported by additional reserves, faced minimal resistance initially, capturing eight positions and destroying bridges around Beit Hanoun. Despite Egyptian attempts to reinforce and counterattack, Israeli forces maintained their positions and captured Beit Hanoun by October 20. The Egyptians were forced to reroute their movements to the west, between the road and the Mediterranean, due to Israeli pressure.

Ultimately, while the Beit Hanoun wedge did not achieve its primary goal of dividing the Egyptian expeditionary force, it forced Egypt to allocate significant resources to the area, thereby aiding other Israeli operations in Operation Yoav. The wedge's aftermath contributed to the strategic discussions in the 1949 Armistice Agreements, leading to territorial concessions by Israel in exchange for Egyptian withdrawal from the Fallujah Pocket.
