2 agos 1948 anni - Operation GYS 2
Descrizione:
Between the first and second GYS operations, Israeli forces disrupted Egyptian transportation along the Majdal – Bayt Jibrin road. The second attempt to establish a corridor to the Negev occurred from July 30 to August 2. Initially, Givati commandos scouted the area up to Khirbet Qarqara on July 30, confirming the absence of Egyptian forces. On July 31, a convoy escorted by military police headed south, joined at 23:50 by Samson's Foxes, a unit from Givati. Yiftach Brigade positioned along the convoy's route and launched a diversionary attack near Julis.
The convoy faced challenges at Wadi Qubeiba, where two trucks got stuck and another hit a landmine, resulting in a soldier's death. After an encounter with local Bedouins near Khirbet Qarqara, the convoy reached the tomb of Sheikh Abu Ghazala, where it linked up with Negev’s 9th Battalion. The convoy successfully reached Bror Hayil and Ruhama without further incidents. Subsequently, Yiftach Brigade was withdrawn from the southern front.
A third effort, Operation Way to the Negev, on August 18–19, faced direct attacks from Egyptian forces, with only one truck reaching the Negev. This led the IDF General Staff to conclude that ground convoys were too risky, shifting to aerial supply with Operation Avak from August 23 to October 21, 1948. This operation continued until a permanent ground corridor was established through Operation Yoav.
