15 lugl 1948 anni - Operation An-Far

Descrizione:

Operation An-Far was a military offensive launched by Israel's Givati Brigade from the night of July 8–9, 1948, during the Arab-Israeli War. Its main goals were to control the approaches in southern Judea and to halt the advance of the Egyptian army. The operation unfolded until July 15, setting the stage for the subsequent Operation Death to the Invader.

Background: As the first United Nations Truce ended on July 8, Israel focused its military efforts on Operations Danny and Dekel. Meanwhile, in the south, the Givati and Negev Brigades were not able to connect. However, within ten days, the Givati Brigade succeeded in taking control of areas in the northern Negev and the western foothills of the Hebron district.

Operation Details: The operation was planned by Operational Commander Shimon Avidan, who outlined the strategy in meetings held at brigade headquarters on July 5. The operation was divided into two phases: the first targeted the Tell es-Safi area, and the second aimed at Beit 'Affa, Hatta, and Jusayr. On July 7, the 1st Battalion received orders to clear the area of refugees to prevent enemy infiltration to this strategically important position. The initial phase saw the capture of 16 villages and resulted in over 20,000 people fleeing the area.

Aftermath: Although the operation achieved some tactical gains, particularly in clearing Israeli flanks, it did not meet its primary objective of linking up with forces in the Negev desert. This led directly to the initiation of Operation Death to the Invader on July 16, aiming to accomplish the unmet goals of Operation An-Far.
