18 lugl 1948 anni - Operation Dekel
Descrizione:
Operation Dekel was a significant offensive conducted by Israeli forces from July 8-18, 1948, aimed at capturing Nazareth and the Lower Galilee. It involved the 7th Armoured Brigade led by Ben Dunkelman, along with units from the Carmeli and Golani Brigades. The operation led to the capture of several Palestinian Arab villages, with varying outcomes for the local populations:
Nazareth (Population: 18,000): The city surrendered on July 16 after minimal conflict. Unlike surrounding areas, the inhabitants were not forced to evacuate due to Dunkelman's refusal to follow orders to expel them, preserving the city's population.
Saffuriya (Population: 4,000): Heavily affected, with the population fleeing following Israeli bombardment. Those who returned were expelled again in late 1948 and early 1949, leaving the village destroyed.
Villages like Kuwaykat, Khirbat Jiddin, Al-Mujaydil, Ma'lul, Hittin, Amqa, ad-Damun, and Mi'ar were depopulated and largely destroyed.
Julis, Al-Makr, I'billin, Kabul, Tamra, Yafa, Uzeir, Kfar Kanna, Rummana, Bu'eina, Tur'an, Nahf: These towns and villages saw varying degrees of impact, from destruction to the survival of the settlements with changes in their demographic compositions.
This operation significantly altered the demographic and geographic landscape of the region, with lasting impacts on the local populations and the physical area.
