18 lugl 1948 anni - Battles of Latrun
Descrizione:
The Battles of Latrun (1948) were a series of confrontations between the Israel Defense Forces and the Jordanian Arab Legion, primarily over the strategic control of the Latrun area, which dominated the main road linking Jerusalem to the Israeli coastal plain. Despite multiple Israeli assaults, Latrun remained under Jordanian control until 1967. These battles were significant for their impact on the supply routes to Jerusalem, particularly as they led to the construction of an alternative route, the "Burma Road," to circumvent the Jordanian-held position. The battles were costly for Israel, with 168 soldiers killed, and became deeply embedded in the national memory, often highlighted in military studies and commemorations. The area now hosts a museum dedicated to these and other military engagements.
