22 marzo 1946 anni - Treaty of London
Descrizione:
The Treaty of London, signed on March 22, 1946, between the UK and Transjordan, marked the path to independence for Transjordan, renaming it the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan with Emir Abdullah I as king. Despite this shift towards sovereignty, the UK retained military bases and influence, particularly in subsidizing the Arab Legion. The treaty, which came into effect on June 17, 1946, superseded the 1928 Organic Law that had begun easing the UK's control over financial and foreign policy matters. The independence process gained international acknowledgment when the League of Nations recognized Transjordan's impending sovereignty on April 18, 1946. Transjordan officially became a kingdom on May 25, 1946, when its parliament transformed the Emirate into a Monarchy, celebrating this date as its Independence Day. However, it faced challenges in gaining full international status, evidenced by the Soviet Union's 1946 UN veto over its membership, claiming it wasn't fully independent of British control. This led to another treaty in March 1948 to remove remaining sovereignty restrictions, culminating in Jordan's admission to the United Nations on December 14, 1955, alongside 15 other countries.
