23 magg 1948 anni - Operation Yiftach
Descrizione:
Operation Yiftach, conducted by the Palmach from April 28 to May 23, 1948, aimed to capture Safed and secure the eastern Galilee before the British Mandate ended on May 14. Led by Yigal Allon and involving two battalions, this offensive was part of Plan Dalet to control areas designated for the Jewish state by the UN partition plan. Initial setbacks included failed assaults on al-Nabi Yusha' fort, but strategic gains followed with the taking of Rosh Pinna's army camp. Allon's approach was to clear all Arab forces and inhabitants from the area, leaving no Arab civilian communities in his wake.
Key battles included the attack on Ein al-Zeitun where a psychological warfare tactic using the noisy but inaccurate Davidka mortar led to Arab demoralization. Subsequent operations cleared nearby villages and Bedouin tribes, reinforcing Jewish control. The main battle for Safed commenced with intense bombardment on May 9-10, eventually leading to the town's capture. The operation concluded with securing borders against Lebanese and Syrian incursions. Its aftermath saw the forced displacement of numerous Arab inhabitants, shaping the demographic and geopolitical landscape of the region.
