30 apr 1948 anni - Operation Hametz
Descrizione:
Operation Hametz was a key Zionist offensive in late April 1948 aimed at capturing villages near Jaffa to encircle the town. It marked the only significant British involvement in the fighting during the 1948 Palestine war, culminating in a notable clash with the Irgun, which helped solidify their role in Jaffa's eventual capture on May 13.
The operation began on April 25 with the Irgun launching an attack from Tel Aviv, despite the Haganah being initially unaware. The operation saw a three-day mortar barrage and attacks by several brigades, capturing the Menashiya neighborhood with minimal resistance. British intervention escalated rapidly, fearing the implications of Jewish gains after their recent capture of Haifa. This led to a substantial British military response, including threats against Tel Aviv and direct engagements in Jaffa, though their efforts were largely thwarted by Irgun defenses.
The conflict concluded with a negotiation that saw the cessation of Operation Hametz and an agreement for the Haganah not to attack Jaffa until the end of the Mandate. Despite this, the Irgun managed a symbolic victory by controlling key positions and significantly influencing the outcome in Jaffa.
By April 30, Jaffa was left significantly depopulated, with most remaining residents fleeing under the supervision of the British Army. This operation was pivotal for the Irgun, marking their largest and one of their most strategic victories during the conflict.
