8 apr 1948 anni - The death of Abdul Qadir al-Husseini
Descrizione:
Abd al-Qadir al-Husayni (1907–1948) was a key figure in Palestinian Arab nationalism, leading the militant Organization for Holy Struggle, which he founded in 1933, during the 1936–1939 Arab revolt and the 1948 war. Born into the influential al-Husayni family of Jerusalem, he was raised by his grandmother following his mother's early death. His father, Musa al-Husayni, served as Jerusalem's mayor and was a vocal opponent of British policies and the Balfour Declaration.
Educated initially at the American University of Beirut, Abd al-Qadir switched to the American University in Cairo, graduating in chemistry. His early career included a stint in the British Mandate's settlement department before leading armed resistance during the Arab revolt. He also engaged in political activism, serving as secretary-general of the Palestine Arab Party and editing several nationalist publications.
Married in 1934, his son Faisal al-Husayni, born in 1940, later became a prominent Palestinian political figure. Abd al-Qadir's militant activities continued into the 1940s, including involvement in the 1941 Rashid Ali al-Gaylani coup in Iraq. He returned to Palestine clandestinely in 1948 to lead the Army of the Holy War.
Abd al-Qadir was killed in April 1948 during the Battle of al-Qastal, a key engagement where his troops briefly seized control from the Haganah before being overcome by the Palmach, marking a significant loss of morale among his forces. He was buried in Jerusalem, near the al-Aqsa Compound, where his father and son also rest.
