The Kfar Etzion massacre occurred on May 13, 1948, when Jewish defenders of the Kfar Etzion kibbutz and Haganah militia were attacked by the Arab Legion and local Arab forces. During the defense, 127 Jewish fighters died; fifteen were reportedly killed after surrendering. Controversy surrounds the Arab Legion's role, with disputes over whether they participated in the killings or arrived too late to prevent the massacre by local Arabs, motivated by revenge for earlier conflicts including Deir Yassin.

The aftermath saw the kibbutz looted and destroyed, and only four prisoners survived, transferred to Transjordan. The bodies of the deceased were unburied until 1949 when they were interred at Mount Herzl, following permission from the Jordanian government.
