22 feb 1948 anni - Ben Yehuda Street bombings
Descrizione:
A series of attacks targeted Jewish civilians on Jerusalem's Ben Yehuda Street starting from February 1948, during the 1947–1948 civil war in Mandatory Palestine. The most notable incident occurred on February 22, 1948, when Arab irregulars and British deserters executed a car bomb attack, killing between 49 to 58 people and injuring up to 200. The attackers used three British Army trucks led by an armored car to carry out the bombing, which devastated the pedestrian shopping mall along with nearby hotels and buildings.
The attack was reportedly in retaliation for a prior Irgun bombing in Ramla. A leaflet found afterward claimed responsibility on behalf of Abd al-Qadir. However, the Arab Higher Committee condemned the attack, and there was widespread confusion and anger among the Jewish community, who initially blamed the British. The incident escalated tensions, leading to retaliatory violence from both Jewish and Arab groups. The day after the bombing, Jewish forces attacked the Arab neighborhood of Musrara in Jerusalem, resulting in additional casualties.
