22 lugl 1946 anni - King David Hotel bombing
Descrizione:
On July 22, 1946, the Irgun, a Zionist underground organization, bombed the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, which housed the British administrative headquarters for Mandatory Palestine. The attack resulted in 91 fatalities, including Arabs, Britons, and Jews, and injured 46 others. The hotel hosted the Government of Palestine's Secretariat and the British Armed Forces Headquarters. The Irgun had initially coordinated with the Haganah but proceeded without their final consent, aiming to destroy incriminating documents acquired during Operation Agatha against the Jewish Agency. Disguised as Arab workmen and waiters, Irgun members planted the bomb in the hotel's basement, causing significant destruction to the southern wing and surrounding areas.
The Irgun claimed to have issued warnings via telephone to minimize civilian casualties, which the British denied receiving in time to evacuate. The bombing was part of a broader Jewish insurgency during the Mandate period, reflecting the escalating conflict between Jewish militant groups and British authorities. The attack provoked a strong British and international backlash, marking a pivotal moment in the conflict over Palestine.
