25 sett 1918 anni - Third Transjordan attack
Descrizione:
The Third Transjordan attack, executed by Chaytor's Force as part of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF), took place from September 21-25, 1918. This was during the climactic phases of the Battle of Nablus, part of the broader Battle of Megiddo, marking a critical point in the late stages of the Sinai and Palestine Campaign of World War I. This operation was strategically positioned on the right flank and was integral to the Battle of Nablus.
The offensive began with an aggressive push northwards, targeting Kh Fasail. On the subsequent day, parts of Chaytor's Force engaged and successfully captured the Ottoman Empire's 53rd Division (Seventh Army) along their main eastern retreat path out of the Judean Hills, crossing the Jordan River. This action effectively cut off the primary retreat route for the Yildirim Army Group units via the battle for the Jisr ed Damieh bridge and nearby fords.
With the bridge and fords secured, Chaytor’s Force advanced eastwards, targeting the Fourth Army at Shunet Nimrin and then moving to capture Es Salt for the third time. The momentum continued as Chaytor's Force pressed on to seize Amman on September 25 during the Second Battle of Amman. In the subsequent days, operations extended further south near Amman, culminating in the surrender of the Fourth Army's II Corps, which had been defending the southern Hejaz Railway. This marked the cessation of military operations in that area.
These successful engagements resulted in significant territorial gains and the capture of a force equivalent in size to one Ottoman corps. The disarrayed remnants of the Fourth Army retreated north towards Damascus, paralleling the movements of the Seventh and Eighth Armies, all reeling from the Allied offensives along the Mediterranean coast and through the Judean Hills. The subsequent pursuit of these columns by the Desert Mounted Corps led to the capture of Damascus on October 1. This relentless pursuit continued towards Haritan north of Aleppo, culminating shortly after with the signing of the Armistice of Mudros on October 30, 1918, which effectively ended the Sinai and Palestine campaign.
