The Annexation of Hawaii occurred in July 1898 when the United States formally took control of the Hawaiian Islands, previously an independent kingdom and then a republic. This strategic move, driven by economic interests in Hawaiian sugar plantations and the islands' key position in the Pacific, was facilitated by the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani in 1893 by American residents and was realized during the Spanish-American War to secure a mid-Pacific naval station at Pearl Harbor.
