The white population became convinced that a rebellion of slaves was going to happen. They believed black slaves and poor white settlers wanted to burn down and take over the city. A number of fires occured throughout the city and people suspected slaves were behind them. As a result, many were arrested, approximately 30 black people and 4 white people were executed, over 80 were exiled.
