9 magg 1800 anni - John Brown

Descrizione:

John Brown was a leading figure in the abolitionist movmenet. He believed aggressive action to be necessary to bring about the abolition of slavery. Born on May 9, 1800, he grew up in a home that was a key stop on the Underground Railroad. He became involved in militant action in the 1850s. He led raids to free enslaved people and worked with other important abolitionist figures, such as Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass. Perhaps most notable was his raid on the armory of Harper's Ferry to initiate a slave revolt. Although the raid ultimately failed, it had considerable impact on the ongoing debate around slavery and would see him become an icon and hero for the Union during the Civil War. He was hanged for his staging of the raid on December 2, 1859.
