The 1660 destruction of Tiberias occurred during a Druze power struggle in the Galilee, leading to the abandonment of the city by its Jewish community. Some sources attribute the destruction to an earthquake, while others suggest Druze involvement or a combination of both factors. The Jewish community fled entirely, and Tiberias remained desolate for many years until it was rebuilt by Zahir al-Umar in the early eighteenth century. In contrast, Safed, which also faced destruction in 1660, recovered relatively quickly and remained an important Jewish center in the Galilee.
