10 sett 1197 anni - Battle of Jaffa
Descrizione:
In 1197, the Battle of Jaffa saw the Ayyubid army clash with the Crusaders outside the city, resulting in the Crusaders' defeat and the loss of Jaffa.
Background: In 1195, King Henry VI of Germany launched a new crusade, opting for a safer sea route. While exaggerated reports claimed an army of 60,000, the actual number was likely far lower. Ayyubid forces, led by Al-Adil, confronted the Crusaders in Galilee, but intervention from King Henry averted disaster.
Battle: With the truce of 1192 expired, Al-Adil moved towards Jaffa, ruled by Renauld Barlais. The Crusaders, recklessly, met the Ayyubids in battle outside Jaffa. Despite their initial attack, the Crusaders were swiftly overwhelmed, finding themselves locked out of the city gates by fearful defenders. Massacred outside, the remaining Crusaders retreated to the city's citadel, facing a relentless Ayyubid assault. Weakened, they eventually fell, with King Henry's relief army arriving too late, compounded by Henry's accidental death. With Jaffa captured and news of Henry's demise, the Crusaders withdrew.
Aftermath: Jaffa remained under Muslim control until 1204, when it was returned to the Crusaders in a truce with Al-Adil. Despite this, the city lay deserted until 1228, bearing witness to the transient nature of power in the Holy Land.
