1 gen 1188 anni - Siege of Tyre
Descrizione:
The siege of Tyre, from November 12, 1187, to January 1, 1188, was a significant episode during Saladin's campaign, ending in a Crusader victory under Conrad of Montferrat. Following the Battle of Hattin and the loss of Jerusalem, Crusader forces consolidated in Tyre, one of the remaining cities still under Christian control. Upon his arrival, Conrad revitalized the city’s defenses, significantly enhancing its resistance against Saladin’s forces.
Saladin’s army laid siege with extensive manpower and siege engines, continuously bombarding Tyre's fortifications. However, despite persistent attacks and a coordinated naval effort led by Abd al-Salam al-Maghribi, the Muslim forces failed to breach the city’s defenses. Notably, a decisive naval engagement on the night of December 29-30 saw a Christian fleet repel and capture part of Saladin’s naval contingent, critically undermining the siege efforts.
Realizing the futility of continued assaults and faced with the deteriorating morale and condition of his troops, Saladin convened his emirs, and the decision was made to retreat to Acre. This marked a significant setback for Saladin, highlighting the limitations of his army in conducting prolonged sieges.
The successful defense of Tyre bolstered Crusader morale and established the city as a vital stronghold for the Christian resurgence during the subsequent Third Crusade. The siege underscored the strategic importance of Tyre and its role in maintaining Christian presence in the Holy Land.
