The Crédit Mobilier scandal, exposed in 1872, involved the Crédit Mobilier of America construction company, which had been created by Union Pacific Railroad executives to fraudulently inflate construction expenses and siphon off profits. The scandal gained public notoriety when it was revealed that several high-ranking members of Congress, as well as Vice President Schuyler Colfax, had accepted bribes of stock in exchange for favorable legislation, significantly tarnishing the reputations of several government officials and the Grant administration.
