The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was founded in 1866 in Pulaski, Tennessee, by six former Confederate officers, including Nathan Bedford Forrest, who became its first grand wizard. Initially a social club, the KKK quickly evolved into a violent white supremacist group that used terror tactics, including lynching and intimidation, against African Americans and their allies to oppose Reconstruction and maintain white dominance in the South.
