The Gadsden Purchase, finalized in 1854, was a transaction in which the United States bought approximately 29,670 square miles of land from Mexico for $10 million. This land, located in present-day southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, was acquired to facilitate the construction of a southern transcontinental railroad and to settle boundary disputes following the Mexican-American War.
