Egypt was in a weak spot. Egypt's visor, Shawar, was overthrown by the Arab Chamberlain, Dirgham.

Shawar went to Damascus and asked Nur al-din for his help. Although the Muslim leader doubted Shawar as a leader, he agreed to help by sending his most trusted warrior Shirkuh and a sizeable force.

The two warriors manage to take Egypt with easy, however Shawar and Shirkuh's allyship deteriorated. Shawar tried to buy off Shirkuh to return back to Egypt. When he refused Shawar turned to the new King of Jerusalem, Amalric.

Amalric already had his attention on Egypt and so agreed.

Nur al-din lost control of his 'ally'.
