"The governments of the nations forming the
Universal Republic will all pass effortlessly into
Israelite hands, thanks to the victory of the
proletariat"
Baruch Levy, in a letter to Karl Marx
pg 573-575
Descrizione:
The secret association in question was called the Union of Jews for Civilization and Science. It was founded in 1819 by a group of German Israelites from rabbinical families, led by the famous scholar Leopold Zunz, who would later become the director of the Israelite Normal School in Berlin, along with his friends Ganz and Moïse Moser. The apparent program of the Union seems to have been an early draft of what the Universal Israelite Alliance would later adopt: to assist Jews worldwide and develop useful knowledge among them. But the real program went further: it involved a change, in a somewhat positivist sense, in Israel's policy towards Christian nations; it aimed above all to introduce specifically Jewish ideas into the civilization derived from Christianity, which would gradually lead to its dissolution.
The main idea of the Union's leaders was that the Synagogue was wrong to persist in its centuries-old expectation of a human Messiah. The old rabbinical texts had been misunderstood when they announced a temporal king. Behold, all bloody from battles, who would crush under the wheels of his chariot the nations that dared to resist the universal empire promised to Israel, and who would rule with an iron rod those who had submitted. It was the Jewish people themselves, and not any particular son of theirs, who, becoming aware of their ethnic superiority, were destined to conquer the world and bend it under the yoke of the chosen race.
This thesis, already presented at various times in history by isolated Talmudic scholars, was to be formulated one day with rare precision by a Neo-Messianist, Baruch Levy, in a letter to Karl Marx. Here are the terms:
The Jewish people, taken collectively, will be their own Messiah. Their rule over the universe will be achieved through the unification of other human races, the abolition of borders and monarchies, which are the bulwark of particularism, and the establishment of a Universal Republic that will recognize the rights of Jews as citizens everywhere. In this new organization of humanity, the sons of Israel spread all over the globe, all of the same race and traditional formation without forming a distinct nationality, will become the dominant element everywhere, especially if they manage to impose stable leadership on the working masses. The governments of the nations forming the Universal Republic will all pass effortlessly into Israelite hands, thanks to the victory of the proletariat. Individual ownership can then be abolished by the Jewish rulers who will administer the public wealth everywhere. Thus will be fulfilled the promise of the Talmud that, when the times of the Messiah come, the Jews will hold the possessions of all the peoples of the world under their control.
This language, remarkably materialistic under a phraseology still tinged with traditional Judaism, explains how the new sect differed from the Synagogue, and why Leopold Zunz, for example, was led to renounce rabbinical functions twice, in Berlin (1822) and then in Prague (1835).
One of the most enthusiastic followers of the Union of Jews for Civilization and Science was the poet Heinrich Heine, who embraced it fervently. Adhera, at the age of twenty-three, on August 4, 1822. The case of this young man of Israel, whose poetic genius allows him to be classified among the greatest writers of the 19th century, is completely characteristic from a neo-Messianic point of view.
