During the 1950s, there was a surge of consumerism with many owning televisions, washing machines and refrigerators- all new technology. Hire Purchase (HP) helped with the purchases of these items, where a buyer would borrow an expensive item whilst paying monthly instalments before deciding to pay off the rest of what the item is worth or returning the item at the end of the contract.

This rise in consumerism can be seen in the ownership of television. By 1960 there were ten million television sets in use and it was estimated that 50% of the population watched television in the evening. The television was used to great effect; many people's first exposure to the television was watching the Queen's coronation in 1953.
