The Cuban Missile Crisis was the height of the Cold War. The Soviets matched American deployments of nuclear missiles in Italy and Turkey with their own. Tensions escalated when American forces discovered Soviet nuclear missiles stationed in Cuba. In response, President John F. Kennedy imposed a naval blockade around Cuba, demanding the removal of the missiles. For thirteen tense days, the world teetered on the edge of nuclear war as both superpowers engaged in intense diplomatic negotiations. Ultimately, a resolution was reached, with the Soviets agreeing to withdraw their missiles from Cuba in exchange for the U.S. not to invade the island and to remove American missiles from Turkey.
