16 sett 1810 anni - Father Miguel Hidalgo carries Standard of the Virgin of Guadalupe during the start of Mexico’s War of Independence

Descrizione:

The Virgin of Guadalupe was not only a sign of religious devotion but also political establishment in colonial Mexico. As discussed by Dr. Lauren Kilroy-Ewbank, some artists placed an eagle on a cactus below Guadalupe, showing the Mexica connection to Tenochtitlan and Mexico City. Yet, in the context of independence, Father Miguel Hidalgo, a professor and Catholic priest, carried the Standard of the Virgin of Guadalupe while giving his famous speech the “Cry of Dolores.” In the speech, he called for armed revolt against the European-born Spaniards who had overthrown the Spanish Viceroy José de Iturrigaray. This connected to rising creole identity and the creole desire for Mexican independence.
