Macedon was in open civil war as 2 monarch factions.
1 - Perdicas |King of Macedon| (previous ally of Athens now enemy)

2- Phillip & Derdas |Brothers of Perdicas| (new Allies of Athens)

Due to these change of alliances, Perdicas (king of Macedon) did anything he could to remove Athenian influences by inducing revolts all around Macedonia's neighbours (espescially Athenian allies).

These anti-athenian actions forced Athens to send out a fleet & army to sea but first was sent to Potidea in order to destroy their walls & enforce the previous demand - Potideans sent representatives to avoid conflict in Athens as well as Sparta to win support in case of war.

These negotiations at Athens achieved nothing & the Athenian fleet sailing to Macedon was ordered to sail against Potidea too - Sparta promiseed to invade Attica ( Athens ) if Potidea was attacked.

Athens' fleet once arriving in Potidea found it already in a state of revolt & instead attacked Macedon's coast (Pydna & Therme) whilst Phillip & Derdas attacked Perdicas inland.
