In 1829, the Metropolitan Police Service was established by Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel through the enactment of the Metropolitan Police Act. The first constables of the service were then seen on the streets of London on September 29th of the same year. After a decade, the Metropolitan Police Act of 1839 further strengthened policing within London by expanding the Metropolitan Police District and merging other law enforcement groups within the area such as the Thames River Police and the Bow Street Runners..
