The Profumo Affair was one of a series of scandals combining sex, spies and political discourse at it's centre.

The Affair occurred with Macmillan's Secretary of State for War- John Profumo- and a 19 year-old dance Christine Keeler. However, Keeler was also having an affair with a Soviet spy, raising questions of Cold War information leaks. Profumo lied about the affair but a public inquiry kept the story in headlines for weeks.

The affair reinforced the Tory government as old and out of touch. The media coverage of the event showed a decline in deference. Previous tatics used by the government to prevent the publication of sensitive information no longer worked.
